ܝܠܚܬܐ / Yalekhta – (Suret / Assyrian) A cloth or scarf worn over the head, traditionally by women. It can serve as an everyday scarf for warmth, style, or modesty, but in ceremonial or religious contexts, it functions as a sacred head-covering, symbolizing devotion, tradition, and cultural identity. The first painting in my collection, depicting Assyrian women carrying their family members’ babies for baptism, with me as a baby at the center.
